There is no better source for great freebies than your library. Yes, you have to return them, but what you get out of them is so wonderful. As a mother, I have taught my son from an early age that if you can read, you can do anything. I truly mean that. If you can read, you can learn and you can empower yourself.
I absolutely love to get a deal on a book at Borders or a yard sale. However, at the rate I read, I could spend a ton of money on books. It is nice to have the books I really love in my personal library, but honestly, I don’t go back and reread most books. They become dust collectors.
I know that everyone knows about the library. What I wonder is how many people are really utilizing the programs that local libraries make available? Here are some great tips on how to make the most out of your library.
1. Books, Books and more Books – We all know you can find just about any book at the library. Even if you love buying your books, try just borrowing every other book. If you love it that much, buy it.
2. Online Resources – You don’t have to physically go to the library anymore to take advantage of the offerings. Check out your local library’s websites, you will find that many sites now have free music downloads, free encyclopedia service and even downloadable books.
2. DVD/Video – Many have a nice selection of DVDs and VHS. Also, the borrow time is much longer than most stores. Most librarys have new releases within a few weeks of the release date. If your child likes to watch the same movies over and over , borrow them from the library.
3. Cookbooks – Cookbooks can be expensive. Borrow cookbooks from the library and find a few great recipes. For every cookbook I have ever owned, I usually find a few great recipes that I love.
4.Online Programs -Many libraries offer online educational programs that are free to library members. My local library has an online language program, math program and more. These are great for your children or even if you want to learn something new! You can also find research and online subscription encyclopedia services through your library, for free!
5. Classes – Libraries offer a slew of classes for either free or inexpensive. My local library has everything form Tai Chi to Spanish as a Second Language to Knitting available. Check into what programs are available at your library.
6. Storytimes for Kids – You can find some of the best reading programs at the library. I still remember when I was a little girl, going to the library and listening to a story. (oh and getting the treat at the end). Many bookstores offer this program, but then your child wants you to buy a book. At the library, just borrow the books, your child is happy and you haven’t spent money.
7. Small Business Resources – Many of us are work at home moms or business owners. Utilize your library’s small business collection to help run your business. I find lots of great books that answer the questions I have about my business.
This is just the begininning of the value of your library. I hope you will take some time to get familiar with this great big freebie!
As a side note: I wanted to share some great work that Mercedes at Commonsense With Money is doing with LeapFrog. I always get excited when companies like Leap Frog reach out to the libraries. Libraries are usually grossly underfunded, but they are so essentially to our communities. I am happy to see Leap Frog ‘s campaign to give back to our kids. Kudos Leap Frog.

It’s an excellent resource. I grab the majority of my coupons there also. All the libraries in our city send them to one main library. And I go there once a week, sit down (usually pulling out old ones for them) organize it and pull out the ones I want. Because I help them organize it for them, they let me take as many as I like. It’s awesome. And what’s even better is I do while story time is going on for my kids. They can listen to a great story…and mommy and get great FREE coupons.

We love the library and go there at least once a week. Our library also has a coupon swap box where you can take or leave coupons–you can ask to make a box if your library doesn’t have one. Also 2 other favorites the library has MAGAZINES/NEWSPAPERS and CD’s!!

I absolutely love our library! We go every week for books, movies and magazines but we also hit their special programs all year long. They have great summer activities – we’ve seen amazing puppet shows, animal presenters and had so much fun over the years!
