So if you took advantage of the Men’s Sears rebate deal and paid with a giftcard, I have some bad news for you.
It turns out that they are NOT going to accept the rebate if you paid with a gift card. This just seems totally ludicrous that they say a gift card is treated like a coupon. A gift card is not a coupon. Apparently, they are confused. If you spend $50 on a gift card and turn around and spend $50 in store, you haven’t received a discount.
So you may want to return the clothing and get a refund… or maybe call Sears yourself …
Thanks, Cindy

My name is Shayne with the Sears Escalations Team. Please allow me to apologize on behalf of Sears for the trouble that was encountered by all when trying to get their $50 rebate. Here at Sears, we value each and every customer that we have. It is not our intensions to mislead our customers in any way and we are very sorry that this has happened. Here at Sears Cares we are a single point of contact for our customers and our case managers work an issue from the beginning to the end when we get a resolution that best suits our customers and Sears. I would like to ask each and every one of you to contact our office via email at searscares@searshc.com and we will have a case manager contact you directly within 24 hours of receipt of the email. In the email, please provide a contact phone number and we will call you directly. Also, in your email, please reference this web site (Sears Men’s Rebate Update) for reference to where you heard about us, and we do look forward to talking to you soon.
Thank you,

only problem is even if you return the clothing they will give you back the money on a gc. then what do you do with the sears gc? they will definately loose my business if they do this.

Something to help prove our side…. I did this deal online and my total was $54. I had a $10 gift card. Then when I submitted my rebate online, it asked my the “TOTAL CHARGED” from my email comfirmation. And the amount on the line was the $54, not the $44 I paid by cc. So even their system doesn’t ask for total AFTER gift cards.

@Chantel,
Interesting Chantel. They originally said they treat it like a coupon, which obviously is not the case.

Go to your store and speak with a manager about the situation. They can return the items for you and rebuy them with “cash” so that you will have a new receipt to get the rebate with! Or you can call CS, this is working for a lot of people. Don’t give up though, enough people are complaining and they will be changing their minds soon!

I did not take advantage of the Sear’s rebate deal, but I am equally as disappointed with Sears and also will not shop there until they right this decision. I believe in talking with your feet. I’m sure if your complaints go to the right individual in the organization (someone with good business sense that can see the forest through the trees) they will make good on this rebate offer. In addition, you should expect a formal apology from a Sears representative and some type of future discount offer (for your troubles) to encourage your future business! This is really absurd especially when one considers the amount of money retailers gain from unclaimed gift cards! Anyone with any business saavy would realize this & would want to encourage gift card purchases vs. discouraging them. I really don’t like gift cards & this fuels my dislike even more.

The offer states not valid with any other coupons or discounts. Coupons and discounts are price reductions absorbed by the retailer. Gift cards are absorbed by the gifter and paid for 100%. The retailer is not sacrificying anything with a gift card purchase. Why would they consider it a coupon? It is illegal to BAIT someone in with an offer and then SWITCH the terms of an offer. Use these two words and I guarantee Sears Rebate Center will change their tune real fast!

@Timothy,
Excellent way to put it Timothy. I am very disappointed with Sears.

That is just not right! I’m angry that Sears would pull something like that. I’ve always thought of Sears as being an honest retailer. I paid for that gift card the same as I would have paid for clothing at Sears.

I spoke to the rebate center – what a joke!!!I asked them how is a gift card a coupon. They said,,,Maam that is a gift…I said lady, I paid $50.00 for that gift. There is absolutely nothing in the terms and conditions about gift cards!!! If they don’t change this I am boycotting SEARS!!!
Oh… and also I chatted with someone from customer service right before this and both her and her supervisor read the terms and said that gift cards are same as cash and I should get the rebate. (I saved the chat in a word document for proof) So apparently they just make up the rules as they go!!! This is just outright false advertisement!!!
Rachel says
Everybody knows a giftcard is not a coupon. Come on now, that’s just ridiculous.
Kathy T says
I am chatting with Sears right now on online. This is false advertisement, how is a gift card a coupon. You don’t pay for a coupon!!!!!

Seems to me that there were issues last fall with coupons that they put out. It was almost like someone didn’t think it through and then was surprised that we all took advantage of a good deal.
